This turkey-sized flightless bird once thrived on the island of Mauritius, off the eastern coast of Africa. It was long thought to be extinct due to predation by humans and other introduced carnivores. The dodo's fearlessness and stupidity caused them to be easy prey, and their numbers dwindled quickly with little resistance. Recent theories suggest that a small population of slightly more vigilant dodos still lives on the island.
